We are working with Canadian high schools to introduce flexible school hours. High school students generally sleep later due to their delayed melatonin release times, which is further worsened by homework demands and late night activities. Doctors and researchers strongly urge schools to push back start times. However, there are many challenges such as after school activities, and teacher work hours in the play.
Another economical benefit of flexible school hours is the possibility to hire more teachers, as there is a long waiting list to be a teacher in many provinces in Canada. It is our job at Lumos to justify the economic gains of having flexible school hours, the long term national health benefits, cost savings from reduced suicide rates and improved academic performance.
